Having grown up on super hero comics they inspired me to read, write, draw and developed my creativity. Since 2002 I started teaching myself comic book illustration and had the good fortune of being tutored by comics art legend Josef Rubinstein. I have freelanced in comic for many years doing almost every job within the medium, I've designed and taught comics courses applying cultural and cognitive development. I was one of the pioneers of Comics in Education in the early 2000s when schools still frowned on comics in the classroom.
Editor in Chief
In 2007, I was Editor in Chief and a graphic novel illustrator at "Elfin Comics," a published based in Bombay, India. At the time I assembled 12 teams of artists and writers to create graphic novels of classic literature. Thanks to my friendships within the comics industry I was able to hire great artists that had worked for Marvel and DC Comics that have been out of work. Due to administrative changes the name of the company changed to Campfire Comics, the entire staff was replaced by cheap labor and we were all out of a job. Live and learn.
Animatics and Storyboarding
Essential for any kind of TV, video or film making is laying out the idea in pictorial sequence with action direction. This is called story boarding. The video here is an ANIMATIC, or "Animated Storyboard" that I illustrated for EXILE PRODUCTIONS in California as a pitch for a NIKE commercial. They animated my storyboard illustrations and added music. Click the image to view.
Comics for Mobile Devices
In 2007 I was contacted by a global mobile phone technology developer based in Austraila. They were looking for someone to create comics for mobile phones. Unfortunately, they wanted to pay me on a profit sharing deal instead of per hour so I could not invest the time needed doing "free work" while trying to work a day job and freelance comics at night to feed my family. Nevertheless I made some good contacts in the industry, most notably ROY THOMAS, who was assigned by STAN LEE to be Editor in Chief/ Lead Writer for MARVEL COMICS. I created this site to provide the business model. Click the image to visit the site.
Think Before You Ink
I created this website on the art of comic book inking. It houses a 25 minute instructional video from one of my comics courses and videos from my comic mentor, 30+ year comics veteran Joe Rubinstein showing demonstrations and pontificating about the history of comics artists. Comics to TV/ Film
I collaborated with a close friend who is a TV Writer/ Producer based in New York City to publish this comics-to-film pitch. Each year comics properties are purchased by TV and Film producers, we hope that this will one day be received. Click image to view my web comic Zenior.
Concept Art & Fine Art
Both as a developer of original comics and as a freelance illustrator I have very many concept designs for characters, creatures, gadgets and locations. Additionally, I studied traditional painting in Japan and have practiced Asian landscape painting for many years. I have a lot of Fine Art works that are also mingled in with this online portfolio. COGNITIVE COMICS: A Constructivist Approach to Sequential Art
In 2010 I was awarded a Research Fellowship Grant from SUNY Research Foundation at Buffalo State College to create my website and eBook on how comics can be used as an educational method to promote cognitive development. Click the image to visit Cognitive Comics.
Cognitive Comics in the News
I taught after school and Summer programs training youth in how to write and illustrate comics. Learn more about Cognitive Comics by clicking the Comics Attack image to the left.
Free eBook on Cognitive Comics
Download my free eBook on how comics in art education can aid cognitive development. My site statistics show that educators all over the world have downloaded this free PDF book. Click the image.
When I used to work for the Metro News I pitched a marketing concept whereby a weekly comics insert or jacket would have Golden Age (copyright free) super adventures set in Western New York with "Word Detective" activities on one side and a full page of advertising space on the back. Although this idea was accepted their budget had just been spent on a new sports page (like the world doesn't have enough of that!). This is still a viable business idea. Digital Flip Books
In 2010, I was contacted by Educomics.org, a software development company based in Greece. They had discovered Cognitive Comics online and offered to have my content on their software and sales network. My comics would take the form of 'Flip Books' which are essentially digital books that can have audio, video, links and animation embedded into them. Visit my Media page to read about the interactive multimedia comics company I created. This image is of a self published comic book that accompanied the CD-ROM. TEC stands for Teaching English Comics.
I used to write an online column called TEC Talk: Comics in Education at ComiXtreme.com. I spent 3 years doing marketing research and collaborating with teachers of English as a Second Language doing research and development with my TEC Comix software. I have promoted my comics at the Buffalo Comic Book Convention and am familiar with the protocols
